After a long night and day tending to a sick little boy; blowing noses, cuddling, snuggling, wiping away tears, checking temperatures and so much more, I looked around the room and took notice of my mother tentatively watching over myself and my son, tending to our needs quietly. I was reminded in that moment that a life of a mother never ends; your children no matter how old, how far away, will always need the tender love, care and devotion of their mother.
Without even asking for help, my mother sensed I needed support and quickly took on the role of grandma, husband, mother and nurse. She allowed me to be the best mother I could be, while helping me carry the weight and chaos of life with a sick little boy, a husband travelling, and a hectic weekend ahead. While I surrounded my son with nothing but love, support and comfort, she ran errands, picked up lunches, medicine and supplies, allowing her grandson to simply heal and for her daughter to feel the full strength of her support, something a mother craves while she watches helplessly as her child suffers from the plight of an illness.
“A mother just knows”, a phrase I often hear spoken, yet no one can quite understand how it’s actually done, but it rang truer today than on any day I’ve encountered. She just knew she was needed, she simply showed up and helped without hesitation, she gave her time, expertise, and she loved, because that’s what we do. She mothered so I could mother and there is no greater gift than that.
As I sat back and took it all in I felt overwhelmingly thankful. I was thankful for the reminder, the lesson, the love. I was thankful for my mother, to be a mother, and to move forward more self aware and more apprectiative of my mother and all mothers, including myself. Mothers, fathers and parents alike are a gift, and their love is more deserving of appreciation and recognition than it is given.
To moms everywhere, thank you for supplying the world with the love, the understanding, and the gentle support it so desperately needs. May you recognize just how incredible you are and how great an impact you make each and everyday. You are appreciated. You are needed. You are loved.
To my mum, I love you, beyond words, beyond a bushel and a peck, and a hug around the neck. Thank you for being you and always exactly what I need whenever I need it. I.love.you.
