Building Up Beauty with Ruby Roxx

After working almost five years in the lingerie industry, I have met my fair share of beautiful people, interesting characters and incredible business minds and innovators. If you have managed to travel through life unaware of the ideal image the media pressures on women, you are very lucky. For me unrealistic beauty standards are part of my everyday life, especially when it comes to my career. My life is a series of fittings, trade shows, catalogues, fashion shows and sales calls surrounded by the most beautiful women our world has to offer. If you have body or self-esteem issues, my job is not right for you. To be successful in this industry you have to know how to walk with your head held high, and if you’re lucky you will find your place in the world of the bold and beautiful.

Don’t take my comments as negative, I know many of our models personally and they are beautiful people on the inside and out, but as the lingerie industry grows and people become more comfortable with opening up about their sexual health and needs, women of all shapes and sizes are flooding into the market and demanding to be treated as equals. In the past five years I have witnessed our number one selling size go from a “small” and change to become a Medium and 1X2X. Women are beginning to show that sexy is not a size, beauty does not have to be a size zero. I personally love this topic and the sexual health and self-esteem revolution that is taking place for women. When I look at a confident woman who is tall, statuesque and thin I see beauty, and when I look at a confident, shapely woman who is proud of her curves, I see the same level of beauty. Beauty is found in every size, every shape, every weight, and I’m proud to be part of a company who is embracing this idea.

I was fortunate to meet Ruby Roxx, at the International Lingerie Show in Las Vegas this past March. Ruby is a Vancouver based pin-up/plus model. She is a beautiful woman on the inside and out, and she was the first Coquette plus model to attend any of our trade shows. In an industry that is flooded with the stereotypical model, this is a huge step in the right direction. Coquette has proudly launched new product lines in plus sizing to meet consumer demand, and we are proud to be a part of helping all women feel beautiful in their bodies, and our lingerie. Ruby was one of the first plus size models to ever step foot into the ILS Show for any company, and I was moved by her confidence. It’s hard for pretty much anyone to attend the ILS and not have moments of worry regarding your appearance when you’re surrounded by models that represent all the same type of beautiful. With her ruby-red hair, striking smile, and killer curves, Ruby stood with confidence in lingerie, almost willing everyone around her stand a little taller and with a little more confidence. I found myself feeling my own confidence grow in her presence, that her sense of self and own beauty inspired me and those around her. It takes a strong confident woman to strut her stuff in lingerie, when almost every other company is pushing a different standard of beauty. I know that I personally could not have done it myself, so it is not an exaggeration when I say I am so proud to know and work with Ruby. I think every woman is beautiful in her own unique way, and that idea should be embraced and celebrated.

I found I had a real sense of pride and admiration as I watched my customers fall in love with Ruby as they were introduced. She has a personality that makes you feel appreciated and cared for, and she’s one of the most talented models I have ever had the privilege of working with. In all of my trips to Las Vegas for the ILS Show, which is eleven and counting, I have never heard a model receive as many compliments, words of encouragement or thank you’s as Ruby received over those two days (When I say ALL the models I have worked with, I mean all models in all sizes, zero to 3/4x). Countless people made time to specifically stop by the booth and personally thank her for being present at the show, for standing up for the needs of all women, and for showing everyone in attendance that beauty comes in every size. My customers, friends and competitors raved about her beauty and personality, and I even heard from more than one man, that he was falling hopelessly in love with her.

I’m proud to say that Ruby left her mark at the ILS show and in the lingerie industry; her confidence has inspired others to see their true beauty, and push back and demand that beauty be recognized for all. She influences women and encourages them to know they are appreciated, admired and important. Ruby is truly inspiring to so many people, including myself. She leads by example, and although she admits to having insecurities like every woman on the planet, she is changing lives and inspiring people to be proud of who they are.

Ruby has been incredibly successful in her field as a plus and pin-up model, so much so that she has recently stepped away from her other career to pursue her modeling full-time. She graces the covers and spreads of many magazines; she attends shows, walks runways, and is constantly travelling from photo shoot to photo shoot. She is successful in every sense of the word. What makes her even more beautiful is her sweet, kind, approachable nature. She speaks openly and honestly about her experiences and struggles. She is humble when flooded with compliments and seems so appreciative of the success and praise she so truly deserves. I remember speaking to her about her modelling and how it’s taken too long for models of all sizes to make their appearance in the lingerie industry. We spoke of how the dove campaigns have helped to encourage women to feel proud of whom they are, and she recommended one thing for all women to try in their fight to be more confident and improve their self-esteem. She stated how she can’t help but feel beautiful, sexy and confident during a photo shoot, and that every woman should take part in at least one boudoir shoot in their lifetime, and I agree completely. It’s a day about you, for you, a day where you are pampered and free to feel sexy without insecurities. Although the idea may be daunting in the beginning, the moment you relax in front of that camera and let your true beauty shine through, and again when you finally see your incredible photo’s, you will see just how beautiful and sexy you are. Your confidence will soar, and I can almost guarantee that you will be eager to relive the boudoir experience again. Whether you book a boudoir shoot for yourself, or as a gift for your significant other, when your last picture is taken, you will realize this is the best gift you have ever given to yourself. (Could this topic be foreshadowing for upcoming posts?!)

I must say that I feel lucky to have met Ruby, and I look forward to working with her for many years to come. We need to support our innovators and risk takers, and stand behind our positive role models. Ruby is one of those role models, and we need to let her motivation and art, inspire and encourage us to see beauty in all people and especially in ourselves. Advocates like Ruby will inspire millions in their lifetime, and so many women will be more confident and happier because of their strength. I am and will always be one of her biggest fans.

May you feel inspired, more beautiful and more confident than the day before.

I was a lingerie model for a home party plan many years ago, back when paper thin was preferable, and I applaud the use of “real” sized women. Thank you for following me at Triggershorse. – Fawn
